A Great Attitude Leads to a Great Season

Posted by Greg Carter

As another hockey season gets underway, there is excitement in every rink. New teammates, new opportunities, fresh goals, and the chance to compete for a championship are all waiting! While players often spend time thinking about improving their skating, shooting, or stickhandling, there is one skill that can have an even bigger impact on the season ahead:

Your attitude.

You’ve probably heard the saying, “Your aptitude determines what you can do. Your attitude determines how high you’ll go.” In other words, attitude equals altitude.

Talent is important, but talent alone doesn’t guarantee success. Every team has skilled players. The ones who truly make a difference are the players who show up every day with a positive attitude, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn. Coaches love players who compete hard, encourage their teammates, and respond to challenges with determination instead of frustration.

Think back to everything you accomplished this summer at hockey school and through your training. Maybe you became a stronger skater, developed a quicker release, improved your puck control, or learned new techniques that made you a more complete player. Those skills didn’t happen by accident, they were earned through effort, repetition, and a commitment to getting better every day.

Now it’s time to bring those improvements to your team.

Don’t let your summer development stay at hockey school. Trust the work you’ve put in and use those new skills with confidence. Be willing to try the moves you’ve practiced. Skate with confidence. Shoot the puck. Compete for every loose puck. Most importantly, continue learning every time you step on the ice.

Remember that hockey is the ultimate team sport. A positive attitude is contagious. When one player works hard, supports teammates, and celebrates the success of others, the entire team becomes stronger. Championships aren’t won because one player scores all the goals, they’re won because every player buys into a common goal and gives their best effort.

There will be games where everything goes your way and games where nothing seems to click. There will be wins to celebrate and losses to learn from. Through it all, your attitude is something you control every single day.

So as you begin this new season, challenge yourself to be the teammate everyone wants beside them. Bring energy to every practice. Encourage others. Stay coachable. Continue using the skills you developed over the summer, and never stop working to improve.

A positive attitude, combined with dedication and preparation, can take your game, and your team, to new heights.

Have a fantastic season, work hard, have fun, and remember…

Your attitude determines your altitude!
