As a hockey player, to achieve something special, you need to know what you want, and once the top of the mountain is in sight, it’s time to set the goals to get there.
A coach once said that goals without a plan are just dreams. There’s nothing wrong with dreaming, but if you truly want those dreams to become reality, you need a roadmap with clear mile markers along the way. Each summer, we work with players from across the country who share a common goal: to become better hockey players. Most have an idea of what they want to achieve, but the ones who make the biggest strides are those with a detailed training plan that increases their chances of success.
So what are your summer plans? If you’re serious about improving, your goals should be written down. One young player we train even turns his goals into inspirational quotes on his bedroom wall. Whether it’s on paper, a wall, or even the goalpost in your basement, writing down your goals matters because if they’re not documented, they’re often forgotten.
Start simple. Maybe this summer you want to develop a stronger wrist shot. Maybe it’s improving your speed or quickness. Power skating is something every player can always improve, so that could be on your list. The key is building the habit: set goals, work toward them, and experience how rewarding it feels to achieve them. That process naturally pushes you to set even bigger goals the next time around.
And if you’re looking for the ultimate example of goal-setting and commitment, look no further than Alex Ovechkin. After years of consistency, discipline, and relentless scoring, Ovechkin has cemented himself as the greatest goal scorer of all time in the NHL. That didn’t happen by accident.
Yes, Ovechkin is blessed with incredible natural talent, but what separates him is his dedication to preparation. His offseason focus has always been on fitness and conditioning. He understands that being in peak physical shape gives him the best chance to dominate at the highest level. His mindset is simple and powerful: “Without training, I’m nothing. If I’m not training, I’m done.”
Long before he broke records and made history, he set his own goals, and even after reaching the top, he never stopped setting new ones.
So what are your goals for this summer? Take the first step. Write them down. Build your plan. Then get to work.
We invite you to train with us this summer and take another step toward achieving your goals. The journey is challenging, but as players like Ovechkin have shown, the rewards are worth it.
